Is TT direct thru Intuit worth it?

by ANDREW on 2003-10-08 03:27:25

I've seen posts on this subject over the years, but dismissed them generally
since I always simply returned the Intuit card. But since I received one
for TT 2003 I haven't returned it yet (due back to them by 10/20), so I'll
ask here. Their price is 39.95 for the Deluxe, and I also get super-duper
copies of both Identity Theft Protector as well as Scrapbook Factory
Standard Edition (damn, I wanted the deluxe...oh well, no pictures of pets
are allowed in the standard edition). In seriousness, I also get a free
state online download as well.

Is it worth it going direct thru Intuit, or does buying at the appropriate
time at something like Best Buy with rebates or their discounts
significantly decrease the full retail price I assume I am paying at Intuit.

(And if anyone cares, I could care less about getting those two bonus
products....)

I really don't want to start a bidding war or war stories about how I got it
for .02 cheaper at so and so, but if there's a significant difference (say,
$5+ which is over 10%) by buying locally, I'll do that this year.

I tend to find that in the end, they wind up about the same. The only
advantage that I could see with buying direct through Intuit is you get the
equivalent of the rebate up front. you don't have to bother with the mail
in rebates. And as far as the state tax, you can buy it local and then
apply for the rebate or just get it as a free download. You may save a
little by getting it through a local retailer, but not that much, in my
experiecnes, anyway.

It has never been a good idea to order direct from Intuit for TTax or Quicken -
at least from a direct cost perspective. Personally, I would wait until early
next year when the TTax/Quicken/NAV bundles start showing up...

Not only do you get a better deal, but in some cases you will get the
software later than you would have if you had bought it at retail...

Agreed. I ordered direct form Intuit one year but it never arrived. After
several calls to Intuit they sent me a replacement but it was the Standard
version, not the Deluxe that I ordered. I gave up and convinced a friend
to let me install his copy.

Ona related note, does anyone know if they will be continuing their
registration policy this year? Might be time to switch to TaxCut.

Go ahead and switch but my understanding is that it is back to "normal". I
buy direct from Intuit and want the package as early as possible since I
sometimes have chance to "play" with my deductions etc..

Is TT direct thru Intuit worth it?

by MARGARET WILSON on 2003-10-08 10:09:50

Yes, I've heard that TT will not have activation this year. Nevertheless,
last year I returned my copy of TT and switched to TaxAct. I ordered the
federal and state versions of TaxAct this year, and a few days ago I was
pleasantly surprised to receive an email from 2ndStory Software telling me
that I could download the "preview" of TaxAct 2003. As I like to get a
handle on my tax situation as early as possible, I'm really pleased to get
this so soon. In my experience (used TT for many years), several years I
found TT available in the stores a week or more before I received my copy
that I'd ordered from Intuit. (And it was cheaper in the stores!) I've
heard that Intuit is doing better about mailing out orders more promptly.

Regards,

Margaret
