A stern memo issued via e-mail said flip-flops, sportswear, denim, logo-bearing T-shirts, sweats and strapless tops were forbidden in an office environment, reported the Sunday Telegraph. Employees were also told "to be seen as a professional and successful financial services environment," which means, pressed trousers, collared shirts and blazers or sports jackets for men, and blouses, plain T-shirts under jackets, and skirts or trousers for women. "We have extended the dress code to all our offices," said a spokesman for Barclays. "Employees must still dress in a suit and tie for meeting clients." When the economy is booming clothes become casual and comfortable because people become more relaxed, said Sarah Setterfield, the managing director of image consultants Impact4Success. "When the economy is on a downward curve people begin dressing far more smartly," she said.
